Diamond Definitions
Alluvial Stone - A stone that has been deposited in a sea, lake or stream bed. Diamonds and other gems are transported by water and can be found in alluvial deposits.
American Cut – Marcel Tolkowsky mathematically calculated the ideal proportions and facet angles to produce maximum brilliancy. These measurements, with a high degree of fire, in a round diamond brilliant are considered by many to be the perfect cut.
Baguette – A type of diamond cut. Also a style of “step-cutting” rectangular, trapeze-shaped or small stones. From the French word meaning “rod.”
Bearded Girdle – Numerous hairline fractures extending a short distance into the stone can result from the diamond being rounded up too quickly in the fashioning process.
Bezel – Refers to three specific and related parts of the stone: The crown or proportion of a brilliant-cut gemstone above the girdle; the sloping surface between the girdle and the table; or only a small part of the sloping surface just above the girdle, which is the so-called “setting edge.”
